St. Mark's is getting ready for SEARCH XVIII!

The dates for Spring Search XVIII are Friday, May 6th to Sunday May 8th. Once again, we will hold our Search experience at nearby San Marcos Baptist Camp up in the mountains behind Santa Barbara. While the Search team realizes that May 8th is Mother's Day, what mother wouldn't be extra proud of a son or daughter who decides to honor God first on a once-in-a-lifetime retreat experience?  This Spring, the Search co-leaders are UCSB undergrads Lisa Berry and Eugene Del Rosario.  For more information or to get involved as a team member, please click here.  (To be a team member of Search, you must have first attended a Search experience).

Archbishop José H. Gómez

On April 6, 2010, Archbishop José H. Gómez was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California, by Pope Benedict XVI. Gómez will succeed Cardinal Roger Mahony upon his retirement on February 27, 2011. He will be the first Hispanic to serve as Archbishop of Los Angeles, as well as the highest-ranking Hispanic bishop in the United States.

The Most Rev. Jose H. Gomez, was born on December 26, 1951, in Monterrey, Mexico. He earned an accounting degree in 1975 as well as a B.A. in Philosophy.  In 1978, the year he was ordained a priest, Archbishop Gomez completed his B.A. in Theology at the University of Navarre, Rome Campus. He then received his Doctorate in Theology in Pamplona, Spain in 1980.

Until his appointment as Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles on April 6, 2010, Archbishop Gomez has been serving as Archbishop of San Antonio since February 15, 2005. He had previously served as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Denver, since his ordination on March 26, 2001.

His Episcopal motto is taken from a scriptural passage of the Letter to the Hebrews: “Let us go forth with confidence to the Throne of Grace” (Heb. 4:16).

St. Mark’s University Parish Welcomes Archbishop Gomez!

Review of "In the World But Not of the World"

On January 13th, St. Mark’s Graduate Students, in collaboration with Veritas Forum and the Amator Institute, were proud to host “In the World But Not of the World,” a panel discussion attended by three top Christian university leaders.  The 90-minute talk focused on issues confronting Christians today, with a focus on Christian university students.  The panelists were Dr. Glenn E. Lucas, Executive Vice Chancellor of the University of California at Santa Barbara, Dr. Hamid Shirvani, President of California State University Stanislaus, and Dr. Michael F. McLean, President of Thomas Aquinas College in Ventura County, California.  The talk was well attended by about 80 students, faculty, and community members.

The three panelists began the evening by giving short prepared statements on their take of the title issue, “what it means to be a Christian college student in the world today.”  President Shirvani began by giving a nuanced and interesting statement on the need for Christians in the university to take the secular, multi-faith nature of the institution not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to find ways to evangelize their faith in a manner sensitive to the environment.  In response to a perceived loss of Christian influence in the university, he saw the potential to reassert Christian ideals if Christians would be proud of that identity.  President McLean went further with this idea, issuing a strong call for Christians to be mindful of the larger mission of faith, focused not only on personal spiritual growth but the promotion of a more spiritually conscious society.  Citing the words of Pope John Paul II and his own experience as leader of a private, openly Catholic college, President McLean advocated for an educational system that is mindful of morality and embraces the notion of an education molding whole people, rather than merely intellects.  Executive Vice Chancellor Lucas took a slightly different tack, personably relating his life experience as someone whose faith has grown over time along with his work in academia.   He cast the Christian mission as one of patience and understanding, careful to hew to the standards required by the secular institution while equally careful to let compassion and understanding serve as the fruits of his faith.   Evangelization, in his view, was far more guided by right actions than right speech, which jaded university students are all too willing to question.

After the statements, audience questions were lively.  Though President Shirvani was forced to leave due to unavoidable engagements partway through, President McLean and Vice Chancellor Lucas kept up a spirited discussion.  Many in the audience were very interested in religion’s relationship to science, and how students and faculty should reconcile claims between the two that might seem mutually exclusive.  Others, especially students, were struggling with notions of doubt and insecurity over their faith, and were curious about whether these doubts could have some benefits, and in the meantime, how to work through them in the correct way.  The two remaining panelists stayed afterward to enjoy coffee and cake with much of the audience.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL HALLOWEEN PARKING LOT PROGRAM

Working together in teams, the St. Mark's PPT and Search Retreat student leaders once again proved that out-of-town students are willing to pay top dollar to rent a parking spot for the world famous multi-day Isla Vista Halloween block party.  Students successfully rented out all open spaces on Saturday night, Oct 30th with minimal impact to to the parish grounds and raised about $4,000.  All of the proceeds from this fund-raising will be used to offset the costs of the upcoming SEARCH XVII coming up on the weekend of November 19-21.  For information, and to register for SEARCH XVII, please contact Courtney Fritz or Steve D'Cou.

ROMAN RUSH Wii BOXING WINNER ANNOUNCED

After a fierce competition during which Fr. Love was handily taken out in the second round by KO, UCSB Sophomore Brent Holloway emerged as last man standing of the Roman Rush Wii Boxing and Ice Cream Social. Combining rapid and unrelenting right hand jabs with  agile ducks and head bobs, Brent looked like a pro out there, which led some to consider if he is managing to finish all of his homework amidst his daily sweat-filled Wii workouts.  That's one more thing to put one your resume, Brent!  PPT Chairman Eugene Del Rosario is shown below presenting Brent with a $20 gift certificate to Blenders in the Grass for his heroic, but physically exhausting victory.

RCIA CLASSES FOR 2010-2011

Sr. Eva Duarte and Deacon Chris Sandner have been hard at work formulating the 2010-2011 Sacraments of Initiation Calendar.   We know that, for one reason or another, a number of students and other folks did not complete the Sacraments of Initiation in grade school or in high school (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist). In general, for those interested in completing these sacraments, you will need to faithfully attend a once-a-week class either in Spanish or in English, and also attend Sunday Mass.  You will receive your sacraments on the Easter Vigil (if you are being baptized).  If you are baptized, you will celebrate your confirmation with Bishop Thomas Curry in the Spring of 2011.  If you have been waiting for the right moment to finally realize your dream of becoming a fully initiated Roman Catholic person, now is your best chance!  If you have been baptized already, please try to obtain an official and recent baptism certificate (with a signature and seal).

  • In English, classes will begin on Monday Sept 27th at 6:00pm
  • In Spanish, classes begin on Tuesday, Sept 28th at 6:00pm

Please take a moment right now, and contact Deacon Chris Sandner (sandner@verizon.net) or Sr. Eva Duarte (evamaria122@yahoo.com) to sign up and get started.

STUDENT LOUNGE REMODEL UNDERWAY

Say Goodbye to the old upper student lounge!  This summer, Fr. John and student volunteers are spending a few weeks re-designing and renewing the St. Mark's student lounge.   As far as we can tell, this lounge has never be remodeled, and had become the dumping ground for most of the used and unwanted furniture in Isla Vista.  One student described the lounge as having a serious case of "couch B.O."...  In any event, we are planning to put in new high quality carpet and other flooring in the library section, new furniture to include sofas, tables and work stations,  a better internet signal, a big screen TV, new paint, new double-paned windows and some new light fixtures.  We are hoping to complete the project by the beginning of the Fall Quarter.  Below are some photos of demo night.

JOAN RAKOWKSI AWARDED BENEMERENTI MEDAL

Our very own Joan Rakowski has been chosen by the Holy Father, Benedict XVI to receive the Benemerenti Medal.  This medal is pontifical, and roughly translates as “job well done!”  Joan has been a tireless and creative presence at St. Mark’s for many years, having joined St. Mark's parish soon after it's founding in 1965.   Along with her husband, Arnie, Joan has always given to the Church in more ways than expected, but perhaps most importantly through her weekly service as a liturgical environment coordinator.  If you have ever wondered who makes the color, flower and other beautiful liturgical changes from week-to-week and year-to year, now you know!

HISTORIC MASS AT WESTMONT COLLEGE

On March 3rd, 2010 Fr. John Love and a team comprised of St. Mark's University and St Raphael's leadership celebrated Mass for about 20 Catholic Westmont students. As far as we know, this is the first time in Westmont's history that Mass has been celebrated on the Westmont Campus.  We were grateful to Westmont President Gayle Beebe and his staff and some faculty members who allowed us space and time to meet and share fellowship and common experience together on campus. Way to Go Westmont! We also thank John Vaselina and Laura Schuberg for helping to arrange the evening.  We at St. Mark's hope that this is the first of many future events for Roman Catholic students at Westmont, who have historically had to travel down to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Montecito to attend Mass or other Catholic events.  Please contact Laura Schuberg  for information about future events for Catholic Westmont College students.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT

Deacon Chris Sandner led the St. Mark's RCIA/Confirmation retreat at St. Mary's Retreat (Epsicopal) next to Santa Barbara Mission on the rainy and cool weekend of March 6-7th, 2010.  About thirty UCSB students attended this retreat as a final weekend of preparation and spiritual preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.  The weekend included talks by Deacon Chris, Fr. John Love, and Fr. Chris Soh, SJ.  Louie Reyes also attended and helped with registration and planning.  Thanks again to Deacon Chris for the planning and execution of a wonderful and prayerful retreat.
